Pierre Robin Syndrome

Pierre Robin Syndrome is named after Pierre Robin, who was discovered by him in 1920. As a result of difficulty in swallowing, which occurs due to the lack of development of the lower and upper jaws in newborn babies, it brings the tongue to run behind.

This causes some breathing problems. This swallowing disorder occurs when the larynx, that is, the larynx as we know it in daily language, is replaced up and back.

This problem makes breathing difficult in newborn babies. In addition, in this syndrome, feeding becomes extremely difficult along with breathing.

If no intervention is made under the supervision of a doctor, it can cause major problems. It can cause disability and even death.

Diagnosis of Pierre Robin Syndrome

  • Diagnosis of the disease is made by ultrasound and labor pains during pregnancy, which is called the prenatal period.
  • But the diagnosis of the disease is usually made by diagnosing the baby with distress and a small chin.
  • As the most prominent feature of the syndrome, we can say that the lower jaw lags significantly behind the upper jaw.
  • During the first examination of the newborn, the size of the jaw and the integrity of the palate should be carefully examined.
  • Although cleft palate is among the symptoms in most cases, it is not a necessary symptom for the diagnosis of the disease.
  • Symptoms such as bruising and respiratory arrest mostly occur when the baby is in a supine position or while feeding.
  • However, the life of the baby may come to an end as a result of cessation of breathing even before some symptoms are observed.

Pierre Robin Syndrome Treatment Methods

  • As a treatment method, we can say the treatment of Robin, who gave the disease its name.
  • In this treatment, the baby is laid on his stomach and fed in this way. Thus, the child’s posture is necessarily corrected depending on the position.
  • The lower jaw comes forward. However, only simple forms of the syndrome can be treated with this method.
  •  In advanced cases, this method does not respond and is not applied. In such a case, surgical intervention is necessary.
  • Besides surgical intervention, treatment methods such as nasopharyngeal tube insertion, laryngeal mask and endotracheal intubation, glossopexy and tracheostomy are also available.
  • It is extremely important to choose the most appropriate treatment method for the syndrome. It is possible for the baby to be fed by suckling the mother only in mild cases.
  • The baby should be breastfed by lying on its side.
  • While breastfeeding with a bottle, the baby can be laid face down or fed by lying on its side.
